Less than half an hour away from Innsbruck, it's possible to ski on the very challenging slopes of the Patscherkofel. Igls is a famous place among ski fans since the 1964 and the 1976 Olympic downhills won by Austria's Egon Zimmermann and Franz Klammer. The World Cup came back there in December 1998 for a men's Super-G dominated by the Austrian team, taking an impressive top nine places. Over 20 000 spectators attended the competition, won by Hermann Maier. Now managed by the President of the Austrian Ski Federation, the resort has made spectacular improvements in the man-made snow system and the lifts. The nearby village of Patsch can be easily reached with the Brenner Highway what make it a very popular recreational area for the Tyrolean locals. It's the first time that a women's World Cup race taken place in this area.
