Women´s World Cup in St. Anton

Short before Christmas the alpine women start off into two races in St.Anton at the Arlberg. One downhill and a super combined are on the agenda.

Last event took place in 2004
In February 2004 the alpine World Cup was hosted by St. Anton lastly. Two men´s races took place then. In downhill four Austrians were in front. Hermann Maier won ahead of Stephan Eberharter, Johann Grugger and Klaus Kröll. In the following slalom Bode Miller from the USA stormed to victory. Kalle Palander (FIN) and Mario Matt (AUT) shared the podium with him.

Ladies in St. Anton in 1999
For the last time the alpine women visited St. Anton in 1999. Back then French Corinne Rey-Bellet won ahead of Michaela Dorfmeister (AUT) and German Hilde Gerg. Rey-Bellet also achieved a victory in super G, this time ahead of Alexandra Meissnitzer and Michaela Dorfmeister. In slalom it was Trine Bakke from Norway who climbed to the top of the podium. Behind her Anja Paerson (SWE) and Janica Kostelic (CRO) made it to positions two and three.

Highlight World Championships 2001
The World Championships 2001 took place in St. Anton and became a great sportive event visited by more than 350.000 spectators. The ski stadium was modernised and the hoteliers increased the number of beds. Hannes Trinkl and Michaela Dorfmeister became the stars of the competition by winning the downhill races. Martina Ertl could make sure the victory for Germany in the combined discipline.

Karl Schranz´s hometown
St. Anton is Karl Schranz´s hometown. He is one of the most successful and most famous former skiers of Austria. He became World Champion three times, won the Overall World Cup twice as well as the World Cup in the discipline downhill and one time in giant slalom. As a member of the ski club Arlberg he pulled his weight to make the World Championships take place in St. Anton.

Pleasure in the snow
The mountain railways Arlberger Bergbahnen AG in St. Anton are one of the biggest employers in the region with 34 ropeways and ski-lifts which can transport 46.770 persons per hour. With about 9.000 beds for tourists approximately one million overnight stays are reached in one winter season. All in all the skiing region Arlberg contains 82 lifts and ropeways, more than 270 kilometres groomed ski runs, 185 kilometres natural powder pistes, ten routes for ski hiking, a public swimming pool, an indoor tennis centre and an illuminated toboggan run of a length of 4,3 kilometres and an altitude difference of 500 metres.

Busy night life
St. Anton is famous for its discos, pubs and bars on the Dorfstraße and at the hills along the downhills into the valley. So the "Mooserwirt" is very wellknown on the slopes as well as the "Kranzy Kanguruh" and the "Kaminstube". So are the "Piccadilly" and the "Funky Chicken" in the village. Because of the big part of international tourists English is the language which is usually spoken in the bars.
