2007 in Retrospect
Warm temperatures were a problem in Wengen 2007. Only two competitions were held, the Slalom had to be cancelled. The Downhill was won by Bode Miller. Didier Cuche and Peter Fill came in behind the US Racer. In Super Combined, Mario Matt was the man of the day. He was on rank 30 after the downhill, but used his early bib in the slalom to storm to the first place. On places two and three two Swiss Racers came in, Marc Berthod and Silvan Zurbriggen.
Tradition is an asset
The international Lauberhorn races in Wengen have been staged since 1930. Big stars have enjoyed success here. The Austrian, Toni sailer, for example, celebrated his first notable triumph in 1955, here on the Lauberhorn slope.
Lauberhorn – The downhill
The most fascinating that ski-sport has to offer: A gentle begin, a lot of turmoil by ‘Hundschopf’ and ‘Minschkante’, a calm middle passage, and then, constantly accelerating to speeds of over 140km/h at times, the grand finale at the finishing line. The demanding downhill course is over 4,200 metres long and has a vertical drop of 1,028 metres. The racers don’t just tackle gradients between 10.5% and 90%, but also several hazardous jumps. One of the most dangerous is by the ‘Hundschopf’, a popular vantage point among the spectators.
Wengen – The town Wengen, (1,274m), lies on a sunny, wind-free terrace at the feet of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, 400 metres high over the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland. The traditional, car-free holiday resort offers a family friendly skiing and hiking region, situated around the ‘Männlichen-Kleine Scheidegg’ and ‘Eiger’ glaciers. Since 1893 Wengen can be reached from Lauterbrunnen via the historical ‘Wengenalpbahn’, (WAB). The town has a population of only 1,200, and has 5,000 beds on offer in hotels and the 500 holiday flats. The top events are the Lauberhorn World Cup skiing races and the Jungfrau marathon.
