Review on 2006
Beside the giant slalom classic there was also the slalom premiere on the Gran Risa. In the first run of the giant slalom Kalle Palander (FIN) and Davide Simoncelli (ITA) were clearly ahead of the rest of the field. While the Finn was able to repeat the fantastic performance also in the second run so that he won the competition, Simoncelli dropped back and had to accept position eight in the end. Showing a good performance in run number two Bode Miller (USA) and Didier Defago (SUI) were able to take over positions two and three. The slalom was characterized by many drop-outs but in the end Markus Larsson made it through the poles as the fastest man of the day. Also Ted Ligety (USA) and Ivica Kostelic (CRO) showed a great performance in the second run and were rewarded with places on the podium as well.
One of the Most Difficult Giant Slaloms on the Ski Circuit
Since 1985, the men's World Cup giant slalom has taken place on the 'Gran Risa' at La Villa. Due to this race, the Alta Badia is considered to be one of the most popular skiing areas in the Alps.
The winter sport region of Alta Badia
Mountain tops as far as the eye can see, gruff face of the Dolomites and almost endless ski slopes. All that is Alta Badia, a gem in the round dance of the beauties of nature. It is this enchanted landscape that will turn one's stay into an unforgettable experience. Alta Badia is the ideal starting point for one of the longest and most famous ski loops in the world - the 'Sella Ronda'. All the heart of a skier can ask for is to be found on the 130 km slope system. 40 of those 130 km have an artificial snow guarantee, and all the slopes are reachable by modern and efficient comfort cable cars by yourself or in company of an experienced ski tutor. Alta Badia is kown for its reputation to be able to ski without the need of using the car.
The original way as preserved Alta Badia consists of six little towns, which form three communities. Despite its big touristical development, Alta Badia is not exposed to an unstoppable environmental decay. So this way, the area was able to preserve its original and typical alpine character.
