Cortina d’Ampezzo – Touristic heart of the Dolomites
Cortina d’Ampezzo is often described as the touristic heart of the Dolomites and the entire mountain region Venetien. Cortina, in the sunny Ampezzo Valley reaches a height of 1,224 m and in summer is framed by luminous red-coloured mountains, crowning in such wonderful peaks as the Tofane or the Cristallo.

The slopes
In winter the sport centre, one of the most famous in the world, offers 58 cross-country skiing courses and 110 downhill slopes with a total length of 140 km, ranging over altitudes between 1,050 and 2,932 metres. There’s something for every taste regarding the level of difficulty. 33% of the slopes are easy, (blue), 62% are classed as medium, (red), and 5% are difficult, (black). As well as that, 95% of the slopes have an artificial-snow machine.
The skiing region boasts 51 oppurtunities to ascend the mountain: 6 cable cars, 30 chair-lifts and 15 ski-lifts. In all they can convey around 60,000 persons per hour.
For really daring riders there are a number of extreme-sport courses available, intended to offer that special ‘kick’. There’s the possibility, for example, to thunder down the slopes or bob-sleigh runs using exotic forms of transport.

The ice-rink
A further attraction in Cortina d’Ampezzo is the Olympc ice-rink that was constructed for the 7th Olympiad in 1956. Altogether there are 12,000 seats for spectators looking over a 4,320 m2 area of ice, 1,800 m2 of that with an artificial cooling system. The winter-sport guests can have fun ice-skating themselves or enjoy watching ice hockey or ice-skating competitions. On top of that the sport clubs in Cortina organise many affairs, so that the calendar of events is always well filled.

A lot happening in Cortina
But sport doesn’t have to be the main focus of attention when you stay in Cortina. There are various oppurtunies to enjoy wellness and beauty programmes or to savour the night life. Aprés-ski is possible as are disco nights until the early hours. The only thing the guests have to worry about is which of the top class restaurants to visit first.
